Sedap Corner

For decades, Mi goreng from Indonesia used to reign our table when the residents were struck with craving for  instant super spicy noodles. Used to, cos now we have a new favorite instant noodle at home. The one from Korea.

Anyway going back to " mi goreng" being a product of Indonesia, you would have thought that it was just appropriate that I should have had first tasted the "un-instant" version of it in Indonesia, where else??. But no! I had a plate of it at Johor Bahru, Malaysia. haha.

I was so ready to just "pizza hut" but brother and bff saw an outlet in the mall which was serving local Malay dishes. We were at City Square, a mall at JB where relatively most familiar international fast food chains can be found. But enough of Kenny Roger's, J. Co, Starbucks, etc., My travel buddies pushed me to sit on a chair in Sedap Corner.

But since this was just another fast food outlet in a mall, we cut ourselves from expecting for authentic flavors of the dishes. When we randomly walked-in, we had no idea that Sedap Corner has been in the culinary market since the late 80's and was actually quite popular in the region and beyond.

When you least expecting it, your expectation tends to be met easily. From zero, no other number to get down to. So, my carnivore of a brother had "beef rendang". I actually stopped counting how often he had ordered this dish, during that particular Singapore-Malaysia trip. I think, wherever/whenever it's available, he had this.

At Sedap Corner, it actually came as meal with rice, some veggies vinaigrette and a handful of "kropek" . Well, no need to ask brother how was it cos all beef rendang, he likes.

nasi goreng kampung

nasi goreng too. Two platters of nasi goreng kampung were ordered by the two girls.

Me ofcourse_ordered...

.. mi goreng, whatelse! Fried mee siam. Too spicy I didn't finish it and shared the plate to the group. I kindah like the instant pack version better, haha.

For desserts, I'm now quite confuse which one we got from this dessert outlet across Sedap Corner. But on the table we got the following :

bubur cha cha. It was quite like our local "guinatan halo halo". And just now I realized I already have a post about this dessert here.

Including other desserts and coolers we had could be seen in that post also.

I thought the name of this  beverage kiosk is cool _ Cool Blog. It's another pearlshake drink. I didn't even bother to try it. This was in Malaysia and I lived for ice kachang. I went home with swollen tonsil. haha. I wonder if the owner is a blogger too. :)))

Nyonya's Sweets

They look so familiar, right? Like our local delicacies - kutsinta, sapin-sapin, empanada, puto, butchi, lumpia, etc. .

Found this cart of desserts by Nyonya Cafe House in one of the malls at Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
For 1Rm each (not bad, around less than P15, forex as of my visit last month 2011), I tried some just to know if they tasted exactly as they looked as our own desserts. Well, sorry to us but those 5 pieces that I tried with my friends_ were better, creamier and got more character.

I went out of the mall and saw these generic sweets in the street of JB. I didn't try them cos I had enough of sugar from those Nyonya's.

Upon my return in Singapore the next day. . .

. . found more sweets in the outskirts of Little India which looks were quite similar to those desserts in the prev photos in JB. Only this time, it was x2 in price cos an Sg$ is like x2 of a Malaysian Ringgit.

I tried some and well they were a lot distinctive in taste when compare to the Nyonya desserts. Little India's desserts were overly sweet and it was very hard to finish a bar without battling to gulp water in every bite. Too sugary. .even to my high level of sweet tooth-nessy.haha.

Well, if you thought you could beat me on sugar war, here are more sweets I had in my 2009 visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia : click this and this.

Soloma Restaurant, KL

Soloma Restaurant with its international and local cuisines and Malaysian cultural show is a must dinner place for tourist interested in exploring Malaysian culture.

The cultural show was amusing with awesome cultural dances.

Hey, this is a food blog, shall we talk about the food? The dinner would cost you around $30

Haven't I mentioned over and over again that I love buffet. Soloma has enormous selections of dishes that delighted me. Countless buffet service tables scattered around the dining hall. I decided to start to the ones near our table.

- hot and crispy dumplings, couldn't figure what's inside, all I remember is I took more than a piece and enjoyed them

- Indian dishes

- laksa soup

-shawarma

- fresh salad

- cherry tomatoes

- diced tomatoes in different colors

- salted eggs plus others I couldn't name

- spicy squid

There were more that I hadn't taken photos of, but I had to enjoy the food in real sense_ so I parked my cam for a while and indulged.

-our dining buddies, we just met them from the tour

Malaysian Dessert

Kuala Lumpur had greeted me with colorful Malaysian desserts. Most of them looked so familiar. My expert sweet tooth could recognize each swiftly as most of them are available in our country. I bet, the difference would only be the way they call/name each there.

To prove my point, I tried some of them. The rice cake with layered colors is like our local "sapin-sapin" . The yellow one is like our mais (corn) maja. Although, still early, I have to admit_ theirs were a lot cremier and yes more delicious..sorry :<. Later on,in the course of my KL trip, I was able to taste more of their delicacies.
