Hungry Monkey

We had been ignoring this tiny fast food resto with a catchy funny name at D'Mall ( Boracay ) during our daily meal hunts. Alas! came our last day of this particular beach holiday, already w/o energy and appetite to roam around the beach, we headed to Hungry Monkey and really we were hungry like a monkey too!! It was past lunch  and this would be our first meal of the day ( our last in the island cos we were checking-out that day  ), cos we slept the morning away.

Surprisingly, Hungry Monkey got everything in the menu. I mean, from pasta dishes to maki to burgers to tacos to siomai to pancake to etc.

I tried to get easy with my empty stomach and ordered a small taco for myself. Must be forgettable cos by this time I couldn't remember how was it. Neither I was sure if I had finished it or not. My intense hunger notwithstanding,  haha.

Younger daughter had a hotdog sandwich. Daughter found the meat toppings and bread dry. She's the type who forgets about taste when hungry ( I'm not! ), so she finished the sandwich thu' she complained it was not good. haha.

Older daughter had a plate of carbonara. Looks appetizing, right? But this was left half done. Daughter didn't like it. I tried a fork of it and couldn't help but agree with her. It was bland and the pasta was a bit soggy. Btw, wt#  those veggies doing in the plate??

We left Hungry Monkey still with ranting tummies. We dropped by again at ShareTea and drowned our hunger with loads of milk teas and smoothies.
The sad cute puppy? Nothing, haha. He/she was next door of  Hungry Monkey, with a look like he could relate to us.

Balut

Looks like I'm a vendor here, yes?
And what do you think I'm selling here..
haha.
Could be I had ran out of mollah to pay the hotel and fares and resolved to do some work?
Possibilities.
haha.

This was in Boracay. Balut by the beach_ best combi! I just had the sudden craving of balut when I saw those random people ( I didn't know them ) eating balut right in front of the hotel.

best eaten when hot, crack the egg to make a window then drizzle with salt and  spicy vinegar mix, then slurp, slurp..try to ignore the embryo instead try to think of it as part of the softie yolk, enjoy!

I swear I never had that much of balut ever. Even when I ate balut with husband, my max would only be up to two. That night I had like 4 eggs. And I was like wanting more but had to stop myself. Why? Cos I didn't want to end up in the hospital, silly.

Balut is a boiled duck embryo and quite popular here in my country and in some others around Southeast Asia.
It's not for everyone thu'. So for the benefit of the aliens, I won't share here a close-up shot of it. But if you're keen_ do google balut. You'll see what I'm sayin'.

Shellacked by Backyard BBQ

During our most recent Boracay (Nov.'12), Backyard BBQ at D'Mall was up on the list for us to dine in cos 1st we hadn't tried it yet and 2nd my younger daughter's staples include bbq ofcourse. And there's 3rd_ the buzz over the net hyped my curiosity.
One of the evenings, we went but all tables were occupied plus there were q's waiting next. We didn't have the energy to q so we ate at...

...Shakey's. It was quite a consolation that it was by the beach, haha. Besides, that time my girls had enough of the island's dishes and already craving for fastfood fix. Shakey's pizza & chicken by the beach tasted so much crunchier and delish, Case in point._even Jollibee burgersteak would surely taste better when eaten at Boracay, haha.

So one other night, again we were scouting for a place to dine. We passed by BBBQ again and thought we would get lucky cos the place particularly looked not full that night. Only to find out that tables were already fully booked. So they do reservations here huh?

So we planned for a daytime meal at BBBQ, lunchtime. Same thing. Still full packed. wt#!!!!

So I concluded to my girls to ditch the idea of Backyard BBQ, atleast for this season. Better luck next time. And added : if you want bbq...

..here I give you.. your favorite Gerry's, haha. We settled for a lunch at Gerry's Grill in Station 2 with no q hassle at all.

Plus our all time favorite kare-kare. I told ya when we are ultra hungry we reach for our comfort foods.

Everyone was happy then. We thought we'll just have bbq at our backyard when we get home, haha.

Mesa @ Boracay

Just one satisfying lunch experienced at Mesa in one of it's Manila outlets, is enough to get it enlisted to my girls' favorites. So when they spotted one in Boracay, it had already been written that we would have one meal there.

Mesa at Boracay is located at station 2. Within the beach front prime location of Boracay Regency, and obviously being run by this high end resort.

We had one of our beach lunches there. I think it was when we were already had too much of "high-cholesterol-ed' meals that I suggested to my girls that we should tone down a bit this time. Because again they were hitting of ordering a bowl of their fave kare-kare, but we just had that the day before this. wt# :)))

fried fish fillet. ok.ok. not the most perfect healthy dish, but atleast it's fish ! haha.

It got four dips. Now I forgot what were they, except for the bagoong *shrimp paste.

Younger daughter's bbq. Yah, I suggested no pork, but this girl insisted cos it's her favorite here.

Refreshed by glasses of iced gulaman/sago *tapioca/jelly.

Another awesome Mesa lunch filled us up with satisfaction.

Halowich

Apart from fruit shakes and milk teas, little sundaes  from Halowich at D'Mall in Boracay , were our favorite thirst quenchers.

While most tables there ordered big bowls of  halohalo and icecream, we chose to have these little cups. We didn't have time to enjoy those pretty giant ice cream to share as we were always running after our shuttle service back to our hotel. Our shuttle's drop & pick-up point was at the road entrance of D'mall and we usually ended our day at long beach there. With a sundae each.

Halowich, I heard rooted from the combi words of halohalo and sandwich. I don't know about their sandwiches, but their sundaes were good. It's hard to miss this snack house at D'Mall with its loud colors. The exterior with its food display is such an eye candy.

Sharetea @ Boracay

I couldn't be happier to have been able to bring my girls in Boracay two weeks ago and to have been able to steal a summery weather in November. It was hot and perfect. *more of this latest Boracay @ my other blog*

Two "must haves" when in Boracay : sunblock with the highest spf # and liquid for hydration!! Fruit shakes  in every corner but daughters had made a pass on them and kept on searching.. for what? For milk tea!!! Their latest drink craze, especially the younger daughter.

Right on cue_ that day, Sharetea was on its opening day in D'Mall. Coincidence or what? And this was one brand they hadn't tried yet in Manila. And it was on buy1take1 promo! How perfect was that!..

... for them and for my wallet. But I don't like tea, much more milk tea!

So daughters got me this lychee yogurt shake which was very me.

We ended up with 4 _ ( L-R ) rocksalt & cheese w cocoa, wintermelon tea, bubble milk tea and lychee yogurt shake. It was buy1take1, remember. So we paid for two only.

Younger daughter was the happiest. She made it her official drink while in Boracay. haha.

Food Vendors on the Beach

This lady couldn't resist street food. Especially when she saw the dried squid on stick. After 5 sticks, she gave the verdict : on this side of P.I., found the sweetest grilled dried squid.

There were lots of cart vendors in Boracay, selling the same street foods in Manila . Carts are parked on a world class, fine white sand/ beach . I wonder how hard they try to keep away from polluting the beautiful beach.

Dinner by the Beach, Astoria

We dined twice at our hotel's alfresco buffet by the beach. One of which was a complimentary dinner courtesy of the best resort manager in Boracay ( hurray!!!), Astoria's Mr. Danny.

w the resort manager of Astoria

Dinner was set up right infont of the hotel. Those two nights, there were bands playing during dinner.

We chose this spot on our first night. This one was the nearest table to the sea and got a lot of privacy. I guess, this was intended for couple on honeymoon. Yet suited our noisy laughter over funny chats between cousin Che and me. The solo table, isolated our noise.

On our second dinner at Astoria, we were glad to experience another set of buffet menu. Service was superb. Staffs were always on their feet to attend guests' needs.

A sand castle was especially made, sponsored by Astoria to the delight of the hotel guests and other beach goers of Boracay.
